Johann Schaper was the most talented Schwarzlot glass painter of the 17th century, who not only painted panes and glass, but also faience objects. Nothing is known about his apprenticeship years, but his name is first mentioned in Nuremberg in 1655, referring to him as a ‘glass painter from Hamburg’. In 1658, the artist’s name was entered in the local master‘s register. As glass painting was considered a ‘liberal art’, he was from then on allowed to train apprentice glass painters. The first known hollow glasses created by Schaper and decorated with Schwarzlot painting date from around 1660. During a trip to Regensburg, he met the French envoy and subsequently many commissions were placed with the artist. As was customary at the time, Schaper‘s works were based on engravings.
