Herbert Brandl was born in 1959 in Graz. As of 1978, he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts Vienna with Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. In the 1980ies his career speeded up rapidly and he took part at international exhibitions, among others at the "Biennale de Paris“, the "Painting on the Move“ in Basel, and he also represented Austria at the Venice Biennale 2007. Since 2004 he is professor at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf.
Herbert Brandl is one of the internationally most renowned Austrian artists, who live and work in Vienna, and is called a representative of Neo-Expressionism. The subject of his art is nature, a sujet that is nowadays almost lost in painting. Herbert Brandl paints in an abstract as well as realistic way, with brush, broom and hands, in a rhythmic way and most of the time at high speed. All of his paintings show a certain amount of erotism.
