Sebastian Isepp

1884 Nötsch/Austria - 1954 London

Sebastian Isepp was born on February 18, 1884 in Nötsch and was a member of the Nötscher Mal-Kreis. After graduating from high school in 1903, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, together with Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Initially influenced by symbols, he later painted more realistically. Between 1908 and 1919, he took part in the important exhibitions of the Vienna Secession and formed the "Neukunstgruppe" together with Schiele and Kokoschka.

Between 1915 and 1918, he had to do his military service on the Italian front and was very seriously injured. Thus, he almost stopped his artistic work when he returned to Nötsch at the end of the war. In the 1920s, he worked as a restorer and even managed the restoration workshop at the Kunsthistorisches Museum from 1925 to 1936. In 1925 he married the singer Helene Hammerschlag, with whom he later had two children. After the annexation of Austria, the family had to emigrate to London due to the Jewish origin of Helene. In 1947 Isepp became an English citizen and worked as a restorer at the National Gallery until his death on December 3, 1954.
